DDR4 vs DDR5 : quelles différences réelles pour le gaming ?

DDR4 vs DDR5: What are the real differences for gaming?

You have a DDR4 setup that's running well, and you're wondering if upgrading to DDR5 will really make a difference in games? The short answer: it depends on your situation — and in many cases, no. Here's an honest, no-BS comparison.

Technical Differences Between DDR4 and DDR5

  • Frequencies: DDR4 typically runs between 2133 and 3600 MHz, DDR5 between 4800 and 6000+ MHz.
  • Bandwidth: Much higher in DDR5, useful for modern CPUs.
  • Power Supply: Integrated regulator on the module in DDR5.

Impact on FPS: What Tests Show

In practice, with good DDR4 (16 or 32 GB at 3200–3600 MHz), the FPS difference compared to good DDR5 (6000 MHz) is often modest:

  • A few FPS at 1080p on competitive, very CPU-dependent games.
  • Almost invisible at 1440p / 4K where the graphics card is the real bottleneck.

When DDR4 Is More Than Enough

Do you already have a PC with a recent i5/i7 or Ryzen 5/7 and 16 or 32 GB of DDR4 at 3000–3600 MHz? Don't migrate to DDR5 just for the RAM. It's better to invest in:

  • An NVMe PCIe 4.0 or 5.0 SSD (see our SSD guide).
  • Or a better graphics card.

When Upgrading to DDR5 Makes Sense

On the other hand, if you're building a new PC or changing platforms, DDR5 becomes the logical choice:

  • Ryzen AM5: DDR5 only.
  • Intel 12th / 13th / 14th gen: Supports DDR4 or DDR5 depending on the motherboard.

In this case, go directly for a DDR5 32 GB 6000 MHz kit — it's the best compromise in 2026.

Our Verdict: DDR4 or DDR5 for Gaming?

If your PC is already running DDR4 and you're gaming comfortably: keep your RAM and invest elsewhere. However, if you're building a new machine, DDR5 is essential to ensure the longevity of the configuration.
